Buy The Look: Brandy

The star on Saturday’s red carpet for the 2010 VHI Hip Hop Honors was hands-down, Brandy. It wasn’t until this season of the Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business show that I started to covet Brandy’s style. Fashionable outfits and Brandy’s many beautifully-styled wigs have helped this mini diva really perfect her look. You’ve come a long way baby.

The eyes. Tatted-up tattoo artist, Kat Von D has got a fan in me. This is one of those rare times when you can actually see the makeup line as a true extension of it’s namesakes personality - from the packaging to the artist’s favorite colors based on some of her favorite tattoos. The very colors you see on Brandy’s eyes can be seen in the (4) True Romance Eyeshadow Palette - Beethoven ($34, sephora.com). You get to choose from eight rich and bold colors to help you recreate Brandy’s striking smoky eye. Lashes as fabulous as Brandy’s are easier to achieve than you think. No strip lashes or glue necessary. All you need is a tube of  (1) Maybelline New York’s - The Falsies Mascara (available in stores July 2010). The selling point: it’s a fiber-enriched formula that plumps your lashes and fills in the gaps should you have sparse hairs. That’s good stuff. Although I’ve tested this product and see that my lashes do appear thicker, my strip lashes are still my best friend (until I get bored that is).

The face. An array of hues can reap the benefits of a good bronzer. And right now, I’m feeling Eyes Lips Face Cosmetics, (3) E.L.F. Mineral Glow ($8, eyeslipsface.com). If your skin tone is on the paler side, a bronzer can give you the look of a summer tan. For deeper hues like Brandy’s, a bronzer gives you that all-too-sought-after radiant glow. Just dip your bronzer brush into the container, shake off the excess powder, then gently apply to your temples and the balls of your cheeks.

The lips. To complete this look, don your lips with a barely there shade, (5) Guerlain’s Terracotta Lip Gloss, Sable ($30, nordstrom.com).

The hair. Be it a wig, weave or your own hair, having (2) Infiniti by Conair Instant Heat Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron ($27.99, walgreens.com) in your beauty arsenal is a do if you want to replicate Brandy’s carefree curls. With shoulder-length hair, use a 1 or 1.5 inch barrel. Separate into small sections and wind those sections onto the barrel, hold for a few seconds, release. Repeat these steps until your entire head is completed. To make your curls last, apply hair spray and let dry before using your fingers to gently release the curls. I recommend this tool for a couple of reasons: it heats up quickly, and it comes with a handy heat sleeve to protect your belongings if you need to take it with you before it has cooled down.
