A woman who wears a red lip color isn’t a woman who’s interested in being a shrinking violet. But if you’ve longed to shake things things up by wearing bold color on your lip like red, and have no clue what the right “red” lipstick is for you, then just follow these simple rules:

Women with fair skin like Anne Hathaway and Christina Aguilera should wear blue-based reds (which means no pink or red undertones).

Medium skin tones (the category Jada Pinkett-Smith falls into) have a much broader range of red lipstick colors to choose from. If this is you, then you can wear orange-based reds like NARS Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil, Pop Life ($24, nordstrom.com) which delivers a velvety-matte finish. And just think, coupled with a some bronzer on your skin, you’ll really make a statement.

For sister’s with deep skin tones like the model, Oluchi, sport a red lipstick that has a hint of purple in it like Iman’s Luxury Lip Shimmer in High Drama ($9.99, walgreens.com). This product is actually a creamy gloss that really gives your lips serious shine.

A wall flower you are not, so why act like one?

Tip: Keep lips lined. Remember, lip color bleeds, so overt a disaster by buying a lip liner that is similar to your lip color or one shade darker.
