Beauty For Breast Cancer Awareness '11

breast cancer awareness month what celebrities have breast cancer wanda sykes and breast cancer breast cancer awareness beauty products what beauty companies are doing breast cancer products for October

According to People.com, it was after undergoing a cosmetic procedure - a breast reduction this past February that comedian and actress Wanda Sykes learned (after tests were run) she had DCIS [ductal carcinoma in situ] - stage 0 cancer in her left breast.

Given the history of breast cancer that runs on Wanda’s mother’s side of the family, she made the difficult decision to have a bilateral mastectomy. She said on the Ellen Degeneres Show “I had both breasts removed…because now I have zero chance of having breast cancer, so I was very lucky.” A dramatic decision yes, but one that was made with her 21/2 year old twins and wife, Alex in mind. And now, on to living…

This year, HKI puts it’s stamp of approval on three beauty products that first are committed to finding a cure for breast cancer and secondly, offer benefits that you care about.

Jane Iredale’s soft pink Christina PureMoist LipColour shade ($19, drugstore.com) was created in honor of actress and breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate. The Big Give: For every Christina that’s sold, Jane Iredale will donate $2 to Living Beyond Breast Cancer with a minimum of $25K in the coming year.

Product Correction: Christina’s Pure Moist Lipstick is no longer available, however, this year Jane Iredale launched a new lip duo, Roses & Lollipops, which includes PureMoist Lip Colour in Roses and PureGloss for Lips in Lollipops. One hundred percent of the profits that come from this product will be donated to the Living Beyond Breast Cancer organization.

Alterna is a luxury anti-aging hair care line that uses innovative ingredients like caviar, hemp seed oil & Italian white truffle oil to bring thinning hair back to life and prevent color wash-out among other benefits. A supporter of breast cancer awareness for many years with products that give back, Alterna has created a special-edition Caviar Overnight Hair Rescue ($15, beauty.com) in a 1oz travel size bottle. Caviar is ideal for women who have damaged or color-treated hair and are in need of repair delivered in a luxurious nighttime reparative treatment - it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave any residue on your pillow or sheets. The Big Give: 5% of net proceeds from every bottle sold goes to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

If only LaLicious’s Sugar Kiss Sugar Souffle Moisturizing Body Scrub ($34, lalicious.com) came with whipped cream and a spoon… it smells that good to eat - but don’t! Believe me when I say that the aroma of Vanilla, Citrus & Rose Notes makes this moisturizing body exfoliator something your body just can’t live without and makes your mouth water just the same. I’ve used it everyday since receiving it! The Big Give: Lalicious will donate 30% of sales sold during the month of October to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

On a personal note: A nodule was dicovered in my right breast during my annual and then sonogram this year which explains the pain I was experiencing. That nodule turned out to be a cyst which was later drained and tested negative for cancer. Please be responsible and get your annual mammogram’s ladies - the standard age to start is 40 years old, however, some start earlier at age 30.

She had her breasts removed? Oh my! That's probably one of the hardest decisions she's ever made. I've got to tell my mom about getting a mammogram test yearly. You inspire us Wanda.
