From the lips of dermatologist and psychiatrist, Dr. Amy Wechsler to our ears are words to live by when it comes her true thoughts on mineral makeup, especially as we transition into new makeup for Spring. Is it a do or don’t?
Sun Smarts: While mineral makeup can act as a natural sun barrier it is important to remember that you still need added protection! Start by applying your moisturizer and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every morning before applying your makeup to ensure you are covered throughout the day. If you’re spending a lot of time outside, remember that you need to reapply every two hours to ensure you’re protected.
- Crowd Favorite: As many women with sensitive or acne-prone skin will tell you, searching for a product or formulation that does not irritate or cause breakouts can be challenging. Because minerals are chemically inert they cannot cause a reaction on the skin and because of their formulation they simply sit on the skin’s surface rather than seeping into the pores. An added bonus? They are also noncomedogenic making them safe for those prone to breakouts.
- Bedtime Beauty: With all of the benefits listed above, it’s easy to understand how rumors started that mineral makeup was okay to sleep in, but do not be fooled! No matter how sheer it is never good to sleep in your makeup. This is the time your skin takes to breathe and repair itself, the last thing you want to do is leave something on that may get in the way!
- Natural Woman: As anyone with experience in mineral makeup can tell you, once you get the hang of the swirling and tapping, the coverage is light and natural allowing your true confidence to shine through.
TIP: Perhaps most important of all, however, is to keep in mind that if you have a product that you love – and it works for your skin – stick with it and enjoy! Remember, there are no rules to makeup. It’s a personal choice, no matter what the advertising hype.
