Tip From An Expert

While trolling through Instagram one day, I noticed a post “Like” on one of my pictures from someone named Marie Claire. Perhaps it was her pretty picture that caught my attention, so I investigated a little further and learned that Marie Claire was/is, in fact licensed skin care therapist who is an expert in skin rejuvenation and treating acne with a focus on women of color. Communication quickly ensued, and Marie Claire was kind enough to offer me/you some tips on what to look for in your sunscreen and debunks a long-held myth.

*Use a zinc- based SPF30 with broad spectrum coverage. The only drawback is that any sunscreens that contain zinc will leave a white film on the skin. My tip is to mix in your foundation or loose mineral powder with the sunscreen and voila…tinted moisturizer that matches your skin.

*There is no difference between luxe and drugstore brands, pay close attention to the list of active ingredients, and you will be surprised.

*It does not matter how light or dark one’s complexion…everyone should apply a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply sunscreen every two hours no matter the SPF level or brand. This will insure that you are getting adequate sun protection.

*Women of color often think they do not need to use sunscreen because they don’t experience sunburn. Although darker skin naturally have some built in sun protection, fact is women of color should still apply a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. The National Skin Cancer Society has reported that skin cancer is more deadly in those with darker skin.

Why You’ll Love It

Although it’s ideal for women of color to use zinc-based sunscreen simply because the threat of white film being left on the skin, I’m okay with the new Hawaiian Tropic collection not containing it. I’m particularly attracted the the lightness of the of Weightless Face Formula, but moreover, the moisturization feature. Until this sunscreen product, I thought of SPF as just that, and nothing more. The fact that this sunscreen also protects is a huge bonus. So, the last time I was about that music festival life, I wish I would’ve had this product in my bag…sounds like a ringing endorsement if I say so myself!
